Bed bugs have returned in commercial facilities with a vengeance.

Commercial properties in Portland, Seattle and throughout the Pacific Northwest are generally very busy places, with residents, patients, staff and guests coming and going.  With that in mind it’s not unreasonable to expect bed bugs to be introduced on occasion.  While often thought to be a problem contained to hotels and other commercial lodgings, bed bugs are in fact a rapidly growing pest problem for other commercial properties that house people and their belongings (even temporarily) including apartment complexes, health care facilities and university dormitories.

“We continue to receive calls from people who have discovered bed bugs in a variety of locations including hospitals, theaters, office buildings, schools and even restaurants. This reinforces the urgent need to educate and be vigilant in the fight against bed bugs.” - Carrie Thibodeaux, Sprague Pest Solutions

Background on the bed bug

Once prevalent in the United States, it is well accepted that these blood sucking insects were virtually eradicated by the widespread use of DDT in the 1930s and 1940s.  It wasn’t until the late 1990s, when international travel and trade started increasing, that bed bugs started to make a comeback.  This time around however, DDT, banned in 1972 due to health and safety issues, was not available to combat these insects.  Other factors that continue to play a pivotal role in the bed bug resurgence include:

  • Increase in domestic travel

  • Lack of public awareness

  • The growing resistance among bed bugs to available pesticides

  • Delayed reporting and therefore delayed response to bed bug infestations

  • Bed bugs know no socioeconomic boundaries, are not a sign of poor hygiene or bad housekeeping and are just as likely to infest five star hotels as they are low income housing.
