give me the burger hold the crickets

Ever wanted a burger made from grasshoppers? We haven’t! But one New York restaurant has been doing just that and customers actually like it! Restaurant Antojeria La Popular in downtown Manhattan has created the “Grass-Whopper”, which is a slider burger made from ground a combination of ground crickets and whole cricket exoskeletons for added crunch and texture.

Think it sounds yummy? The burger is made from a combination of crickets and Mexican cheese; the burger is then topped with chipotle-mayo, onion, romaine lettuce, heirloom tomatoes and all these ingredients are put into a mini whole-wheat pita. For only $14.25, you get three of these “Grass-Whopper” sliders… would you do it?

The reasoning behind this new burger is, according to Marco Shalma, director of operations at Antojeria La Popular, to address a growing dialogue about insect harvesting to feed communities around the world and using insects as an alternative protein source.

Insects like crickets and grasshoppers are really good lean sources of protein; they have 20.6 grams of protein and 6.1 grams of fat; they compare to a similar-sized serving of chicken breast in nutrition, but with a little more fat. Don’t think you want to eat grasshoppers? They may be the food of the future! Insects like grasshoppers are a sustainable source of protein and the UN’s Food and Agricultural Organization says that insects are vital to meeting the nutritional needs of the world’s growing populations. Although many rich nations still view eating insects as barbaric, our opinion of these insects may slowly change as they show up on more and more menus.

If any crickets or grasshoppers are showing up in your business facility, this does not count as “insect harvesting”. So skip the burger and give Sprague Pest Solutions a call! At Sprague, we see these insects not as food, but as problem pests for our clients. Although some people find them to be tasty, they are a true nuisance when they invade homes and businesses and we will work hard to help you eradicate them.
