Carpet Beetle Infestation

Could carpet beetles be infesting your business?

If your facility is experiencing problems with carpet beetles, you know how frustrating these pests can be. Carpet beetles are in the family Dermestidae and members of this family feed on dry plant and animal products, including leather, fur, silk, wool and other fabrics as well as dry food products. The professionals at Sprague Pest Solutions have been getting a lot of calls lately from folks concerned about carpet beetle damage or even the confusion of whether or not they have carpet beetles or bed bugs. To clear things up, here are some facts about these pests that are stirring up conversation in our Pacific Northwest and Intermountain regions service area

  1. Carpet beetles are tiny, often measuring between 1/16 of an inch and 1/8 of an inch long.

  2. Carpet beetle larvae feed on fabrics and other natural materials; they will even feed on dead insects if that’s the only food source they can find. They have sometimes been known to feed on synthetic fibers, but only when these fibers are stained with sweat or other bodily fluids.

  3. Carpet beetle larvae prefer dark and undisturbed areas. They can be found inside closets, dressers and even in upholstered furniture, where they can feed on the natural fibers without interruption.

  4. Carpet beetles are often confused with bed bugs. If you have a carpet beetle allergy, it means you have an allergic reaction to carpet beetle larvae- or more specifically the bristly hairs on carpet beetle larvae bodies. This allergic reaction can appear like a red rash, or red bumps and it may look similar to bed bug bites. Although when it comes to carpet beetles vs. bed bugs, these pests are wildly different, some people still get them confused.

  5. Carpet beetles can often be prevented through strict sanitation measures as well as regular pest control services.
