Pest Entrance in Colorado Home

Looking for pests in your Colorado home, don't forget to look upstairs.

This is a tough time of year for homeowners in Denver and Boulder when it comes to pest infestations. The pests who have been active through the winter like mice and rats are probably still foraging for food and water but now even the pests who have been dormant (the ones you didn’t even know about) are becoming active on warmer winter days. With spring just around the corner, it is time to check your Colorado home for pests. And where should you look? At EnviroPest by Sprague Pest Solutions, we say look up!

We often focus on preventing pests from getting inside through cracks in the foundation or the doors and windows. But another route that many pests take, and are successful at, is through the roof or top floors of the home. How is this possible? Well here are a few ways that pests like rodents, wildlife, or insects like stink bugs and box elder bugs could have accessed the top floors of your home.

  • Through the chimney if there is no pest protecting screen in place.

  • Through the roof if there are any cracks or holes perhaps from extreme winter weather.

  • Any vents that are loose, broken or not installed correctly are another perfect entrance for pests.

  • If there are tall trees with branches that touch the top floors then pests could crawl up the trees and use the branch as a bridge to get into your home.

So, say pests did find a way inside; they are likely to find a secluded area with little to no human traffic. The attic, crawl spaces, and the back of a closet are all a safe bet for pests to survive without being disturbed. And really, when was the last time you went into these areas of the home? Weeks? Months? That is plenty of time for insects and rodents to get quite comfy and cozy.

While some pests in Colorado are simply a nuisance and hard to get rid of others are more dangerous. Rodents, wildlife and some insects are considered harmful, damaging and a serious threat to the health of the home and the family living there because they are capable of:

  • Spreading bacteria and pathogens

  • Creating fire hazards by chewing/gnawing on electrical wires

  • Introducing other pest problems like fleas or ticks

  • Damaging the structure of the house and building materials

  • Destroying personal belongings including clothing, books and furniture
