Rodents In Colorado

Before mice and rats have a chance to get inside, rodent proof your home!

There is a distinct chill in the air, especially in the early evening. This chill reminds us that fall weather is on the way and with it comes the pests that are looking for shelter inside our homes and businesses. Pests like mice and other rodents will be looking to find a warm and cozy winter hideaway, but if you prepare in advance, these pests won’t be overwintering inside your home.

The Boulder pest control professionals at EnviroPest by Sprague would like to offer you a few rodent prevention tips to keep out rodents in Colorado.

  1. Rodents need to be able to find a way inside. Examine the exterior of your property to find any areas where rodents like the house mouse or the wood rat could enter. Mice only need an entry gap the size of a dime to enter, while wood rats (or pack rats) need an entry hole the size of a quarter. It actually doesn’t matter how big the hole is; if it’s not big enough, rats and mice can chew through it, making it large enough to fit through. To keep these rodents from entering, it is crucial there are NO entry areas in your home’s exterior. Careful inspection and exclusion is a must.

  2. Rodents need food. Reduce the availability of food in your home by keeping food stored in airtight containers and never leaving food out on countertops. Keep your garbage in a tightly lidded container and empty it regularly. Never leave dirty dishes in the sink and clean your kitchen frequently to eliminate crumbs and spills that may accumulate (don’t forget areas behind and underneath appliances!).

  3. Rodents need shelter. If you have cardboard storage boxes in basements or attics, change them out for heavy duty plastic storage bins with tightly fitting lids. Keep clutter to a minimum around your home to reduce rodent hiding places.

These prevention tips are excellent ways to reduce your chances of playing host to invading rodents this winter. Unfortunately, sometimes these prevention tips don’t work as well as they should and you may still end up finding rodent droppings littered through your home from your uninvited house guests.
