Trimming Shrubs To Prevent Pests

Trimming back bushes and shrubs from the side of the home will help prevent pests from getting inside.

Bugs are back! Well, not that they all went away but not as many pests are active during the winter which makes the spring and summer season a lot more chaotic in regards to insects and other pests. So while you are starting a list of spring cleaning projects around the home, now is a great time to make pest prevention a top priority. For homeowners in Colorado including Denver and Boulder, here are some pest prevention tips from the top to the bottom of the home to ensure that your spring and summer are not full of pest problems.

Roof - Make sure there are no tree limbs touching the roof which create a bridge for pests to gain entry into the home. Also keep an eye on gutters along the roof line as they have a tendency to become clogged by leaves and other debris and create mosquito breeding sites.

Eaves - Check for wasp and yellow jacket nests and call a pest control professional if you do find them.

Attics - Check around for any evidence of overwintering pests like flies or bats. Remove the clutter and bring some organization to the attic because this will deter future pest infestations.

Bedrooms - Bed bugs are turning up in some odd places these days so encounters with bed bugs are easier than ever. Make sure you are regularly inspecting your home and bedroom for evidence of bed bugs. Also, knock down any spider webs and vacuum up spiders that you find.

Living rooms - Clean up spider webs and spend some time removing clutter if it has piled up over the winter. Also, check your windows for any overwintering pests who could be trying to make an escape like box elder bugs.

Kitchens - This is a year round task, but maintaining a clean and sanitized kitchen is vital to preventing pests such mice and ants. You want to make sure that there are no crumbs, spills or other food left out in the open.

Foundation - Check for any cracks and crevices and be sure to seal them off. If you have a history of ant problems, it’s a great time to talk with your pest professional on preventative ant treatments.

Landscaping - Trim back any bushes or shrubs that are touching the side of the home. Also, remove any sources of stagnant water from the property to help reduce mosquito populations. Inspect for any in-ground stinging insect or ant nests and alert your pest professional.
