There are a number of stinging insects found on properties of homes and businesses throughout the Pacific Northwest and Intermountain region each summer. And we are quick to judge these insects based on the fact that they do have stingers and in some cases can cause serious allergic reactions. Of course beekeeping as well as bee removal should always be left to the professionals, but there is strong evidence to support the fact that without bees, life would just not be as sweet.
Why We Like Honey Bees
Honey bees are well known and well loved for a few different reasons. For one, they are producers of our favorite sweetener, honey. In addition, honey bees keep our flowers looking vibrant but they also pollinate crops to help grow the very produce that is on your current shopping list. Their pollination skills yield about $20 billion annually from many different types of crops. Not bad for a small insect!
To show the major impact that honey bees have even at the local supermarket, the Huffington Post recently posted an article about what a supermarket’s produce section would look like without bees. You will notice that over half of the items in the produce section are gone which is a substantial difference simply from the absence of bees.
And Why We Don’t...
But as beneficial as bees may be, they are not loved by all. Some people have severe allergic reactions to bee stings, which is why it is important to make sure that your business does not contain bee hives. Customers and employees could be scared or even worse, allergic to bees.
