Rat Regulations Come to Seattle

The City of Seattle will put on the books a rat eradication regulation for builders starting next year that requires developers to prove they have consulted with a pest management company before any vacant building is demolished.

Why the need for this regulation? According to city officials, the regulation is a response to concerns from the health department about rat issues in recent years such as the Highway 99 Tunnel project along the city’s waterfront.

Seattle’s proximity to water and booming port operations combined with the fact that the waterfront is built on top of the original city creating numerous subbasements and inaccessible crawlspaces, and you have the ideal conditions – food, water and undisturbed shelter – to attract thousands of rodents.
