Weather Alert: Unusual Pest Activity in the Pacific Northwest Due to Heavy Rainfall

Unusually heavy rainfall across the Pacific Northwest, along with daily temperatures 5-15% higher than historical averages, is driving increased and unexpected pest activity.

Specifically, we are seeing:

  1. Yellow Jackets: Warmer than normal temperatures are causing yellow jackets to emerge in December, a time when they are typically inactive. These conditions can mimic Spring, leading to sightings of both workers and queens looking to re-establish nests.
  2. Rodents: Heavy rainfall can flood burrows, forcing rodents to relocate in search of dry shelter. This may increase the likelihood of rodent activity in and around buildings.
  3. Flies: The warm temperatures are also causing flies to develop and mature faster, leading to increased fly activity and captures in insect light traps.
  4. Fungus-Feeding Beetles: Excess moisture from roof or wall leaks can lead to mold or fungus growth inside structures. Fungus feeders, like plaster beetles or hairy fungusĀ beetles, are attracted to these conditions and may hide within walls, feeding on moisture-damaged building materials.

To help minimize your risk and keep your facility protected, we recommend:

  • Repair any roof, wall, or plumbing leaks as quickly as possible.
  • Report pest sightings promptly through the Sprague Customer Portal
  • Let your Sprague Route Manager know about any increased pest activity before they begin service.

These proactive measures allow our team to adjust our pest management strategy and continue to protect your business year-round.
