Containers & Water-Holding Objects 

Buckets, planters, equipment, gutters, tarps, and other objects can collect surprisingly small amounts of water. 

For some mosquitoes, even a small collection of standing water may be enough to support development. 

Nearby Water Sources 

Ponds, water features, neighboring properties, stormwater systems, and other nearby habitats may contribute to mosquito pressure even when the source isn’t immediately visible from the affected area.

Mosquito Identification & Source Investigation

Different mosquitoes can be associated with different breeding conditions. 

Sprague identifies the type of mosquito and investigates where it may be developing. That may mean looking beyond the area where adults are most noticeable to find water sources, understand how those sources connect to the surrounding property, and determine where mosquitoes may be laying eggs. 

Source Reduction

When possible, long-term mosquito management starts by reducing or eliminating conditions that support mosquito development. 

Sprague evaluates drainage, irrigation runoff, gutters, containers, landscaped areas, water features, stormwater systems, nearby habitat, and other areas that may hold water or contribute to mosquito pressure. 

When practical, we recommend corrective actions that reduce or eliminate those conditions. 

Larviciding

When breeding water cannot be eliminated, larviciding may be considered to target mosquitoes before they emerge as flying adults. 

Depending on the site and program, larviciding may involve a Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) product or an insect growth regulator (IGR). 

Larviciding is not available through every Sprague branch or in every state. Permitting, training, product availability, site conditions, and other requirements can affect where and how the service is provided. 

Sprague evaluates the water source, surrounding conditions, and applicable requirements before determining whether larviciding is an appropriate part of the mosquito-management program. 

Adult Mosquito Management

In some situations, targeted adult mosquito treatments may be considered as one component of the management program. 

These treatments may involve pesticide applications to vegetation where adult mosquitoes rest and are used selectively rather than as the starting point for mosquito management. 

Adult mosquito treatments are not available through every Sprague branch. Appropriate training, equipment, local requirements, site conditions, and the overall management objective are considered before Sprague recommends this approach. 

Whenever possible, identifying breeding water and reducing the conditions supporting mosquito development remain central to the program. 

Monitoring & Inspection

Mosquito pressure can change as weather, irrigation, landscaping, drainage, and surrounding conditions change. 

Regular inspection and monitoring can help identify new activity, evaluate corrective actions, and determine whether the mosquito-management program should be adjusted. 

Exclusion

Outdoor mosquito pressure can sometimes become an indoor problem. 

Sprague can help identify damaged screens, poorly fitting doors, gaps, and other building conditions that may allow mosquitoes to enter commercial facilities.
